BLK Innovation, Toronto
This project involves transforming an existing building into a comprehensive institutional space for a proposed Social and Innovation Hub catering to Black higher education students aged 18 to 29 in Toronto. Situated at 3120 Lakeshore Blvd—West, spanning approximately 21,000 sq.ft., it aims to combat underrepresentation and foster belonging while enhancing the academic journey, well-being, and safety of Black students. Drawing inspiration from Place Attachment Theory and Trauma-informed Design, the hub serves as a haven, celebrating the resilience and pride of the Black Canadian community.
Design Approach:
Central to the design is a display showcasing Black achievements intricately integrated into the space’s essence. This radial layout connects social, academic, and support areas, guiding users through a narrative reflective of their unique experiences. The central display acts as the hub’s core, influencing every aspect and establishing a profound connection between architecture and storytelling. Soft curves emanating from this focal point envelop users in a sanctuary where they feel recognized, valued, and encouraged to interact spontaneously, nurturing a sense of community and belonging. The design prioritizes openness, transparency, technology, and user needs, seamlessly integrating natural elements to promote well-being and deepen users’ attachment to the environment.
The objective is to craft more than just a physical space; it’s about fostering a deep bond between individuals and their surroundings, creating a vibrant experience that ensures security, inspiration, innovation, empowerment, community, collaboration, and, above all, a sense of “Sculpting Belonging.”
